Capital Project Description: As of June 2023, the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) published its final regulation addressing the control of landfill gas methane emissions from landfills in Maryland. The new regulations have been put in place to maintain better air quality through MD landfills Gas Collection Control Systems. DSWR currently operates a flare burning system that burns landfill emitted gas. The current timeline set by MDE requires submittal of a plan from MD landfills by June of 2024, with 30 months to implement. The current flare will need to be monitored extensively in order to develop the required plan and could require a complete replacement to adhere to the new regulations set by the State of Maryland.
